Americas Trading Briefing: trends and challenges

It was a pleasure to have an opportunity to speak at the 2017 Americas Trading Briefing, which was graciously hosted by Goldman Sachs. As usual, the room was filled with more than 250 senior market participants and 25 expert speakers to discuss important topics, trends and issues we face together as the FIX Trading Community.

Every year we learn something new at these events. This year we learned the importance of Managed Services and SaaS/IaaS models. We learned through interactive audience participation, that over 50% of the attendees think that there will be significant growth in Managed Services in the future in an effort to reduce costs/headcount. That was followed by 25% of the audience who thought that Managed Services would continue to grow significantly due to access to better skills sets/software externally versus internally.

We also discovered that while most firms believe that outsourcing functions such as FIX connectivity makes sense operationally and financially, that larger bulge bracket firms still have an emotional connection to their FIX environment and are hesitant to outsource the function despite the clear benefits. Perhaps time will slowly change that opinion.

The FPL continues to formulate topics that are relevant and thought provoking and we look forward to participating again on panels at future FPL events.
